1. What is "Hazel
Marie Cole Charity Award", who is Hazel M. Cole, why the prize?
It is a spontaneous idea born to continue the kindness done by Hazel Pianciamore. The idea has been to "institutionalise" what she did in life through a Foundation that started off as a Committee, and now is legally recognised as a Charity, (ONLUS a non profit organisation in Trieste).
The Charity wishes to distribute three types of awards in my wife's memory. The first for kindness shown by children attending the elementary school whose names have been put forward by headmasters and teachers, co-operating with the association for l'Alunno piu' buono d'Italia, (The Kindest Child in Italy).
The second award is pocket money to students from underprivileged backgrounds and countries who win scholarships to the United World College of the Adriatic of Duino.
The third award is money to individuals who help people not self-sufficient. These are the three initial aims the Foundation has set up as goals, but we are looking forward to widening the scope of the initiatives in the future.
The idea is to create an entity that may be financially independent and can continue in time in autonomy pursuing the objectives.
The Pianciamore’s family has covered all the financial expenses in the first years so that we have been able to distribute the awards immediately, allowing the capital to grow and reach a sum that will allow it in the future to be independent, distributing the return on the capital and not the capital itself. The prizes and the amounts to be awarded and the management of the funds is decided by the Trustees who can refer to one or more banks for the management of the assets.
Even though the Foundation is about 10 years old, many friends and institutions have been very supportive and generous, well beyond expectations.
We therefore like to thank once again, all who have been close to us in this venture and given their support. A special thank to the Trustees, to the President who believed in this vision and to all Hazel’s friends who have helped the Foundation in her memory.

What has been achieved up to now?
As all today a total of 172 awards have been granted, 45 for the first line of prizes, 84 for the second and 43 for the third. Of these 172 awards, 84 have been given to foreign students, 88 to Italians (32 from Trieste, 2 from Gorizia, 14 from Sicily, 10 from Campania, 2 from Calabria, 2 from Piemonte, 4 from Lazio, 3 from Veneto, 1 from Tuscany, 3 from Emilia Romagna, 5 from Puglia, 4 from Lombardia, 1 from Molise, 1 from Basilicata, 1 from Umbria, 1 from Marche, 1 from Sardegna, 1 from Abruzzo).
In the page named "awarded" you can find the names and details of the people to whom the awards have been given.
Next to these activities, other initiatives have been made in Hazel's memory. Among these let’s mention, the regatta Memorial Hazel Marie Cole and the Art Exhibition "Beauty for Kindness - Art helps Life" organized in Trieste and in the Castle of Duino.
